Aerial Banners North Pilot Arrested

This really happened. Politically motivated Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell requests citizens to call EMERGENCY 911 if they see a PA-25 towing a banner. Seems like that might choke up the phone lines, and it would be tragic if someone was having a heart attack and couldn't get through.

The Pawnee pilot was arrested on Monday and later released on $100 bail.

This will evolve into an interesting legal case. We predict appeals to higher courts.

We've been sent these questions from our correspondents around the world :

1) Would you ever call the 911 EMERGENCY line and report a Piper flying overhead if all it was doing was towing an American Flag ?

2) Are the City of Honolulu's boundaries only on ground level, or do they extend vertically into outer space ?

3) Should a responsible citizen call 911 EMERGENCY if they see this billboard ?

Magic Johnson's Private Jet N32MJ

His number was "32" on the Lakers, so there's an interesting coincidence.

We have mixed feelings about the hush kit. It adds sort of a "techno" look to the plane, but the installation lacks symmetry.

And why make it quieter anyway? Wouldn't most reasonable people want it louder?

Plane Spotting at PDX

That parking lot over there used to be a great place to park your car and spot planes.

But in a sterling example of bureaucratic overreach, they closed the parking lot. So now you just park ouside and step over the barricade. You arrive at the same place, and the security level stays exactly the same as it was.

Johnny Winter Dead at 70

Johnny Winter, the greatest blues/rock guitar play of all time, has died.

We saw Johnny play live 25+ times over 4 decades.

And during that time, we couldn't help but wonder when this day would come or what it would be like.

Here is the same report we read when we got the news :  JOHNNY WINTER

Airplane Life will publish a tribute at some time in the future.

What an extraordinary life that was. It's all over now...

Into The Storm

This seems to be a movie about a breezy day on the cargo apron.

They were going to call it, "Gone With The Wind," but that was taken.

Emirates A380 A6-EET Departing LAX on 25L

Our Long Beach Bureau Chief took this awe inspring shot on 7/6/14.

Aircraft was operating as EK 216; nonstop to DXB - 15 hrs, 50 minutes and 8,320 miles (13,400 km).

A first class one-way ticket is only $24,529.90. But who wants to go to Dubai one-way?

Slow News Day

It's a slow news day when the lead story is about a chimpanzee getting out of his cage at the zoo. The escapee was apprehended without incident.

N6651H Pacific Helicopters Bell 206L-1 Long Ranger

One of our favorite Long Rangers, built in 1979.

Here's a couple for the HEFS aficionado's out there ...

Normally powered by a 500 HP Allison 250-C28 SER turbine, in a pinch it also can be plugged in and run off a standard wall outlet.

ATR-72 Airliner Design Review

Leave it to the French and Italian aircraft designers to come up with a plane that has no seats in the most comfortable section, and instead uses that space for cargo.

Airplane Life On The Road

We try and travel unnoticed, but flight and ground crews always seem to find out when Airplane Life is onboard. We appreciate the recognition.

Thanks to Gate Agent Amy L. for this picture of our OGG bound aircraft last week.

Aviation is in Jeopardy!

We saw contestants on "Jeopardy" save the "Aviation" collumn until the very last.

Obviously not very bright people, and probably not subscribers to Airplane Life.

Transair Hawaii

Today we salute Transair, who kicked us out of their parking lot at HNL.

Had we had a few more moments, we could have squeezed a Shorts 360 into this snapshot along with the 737-200F, the Convair 640(F), and KC-10 Extender.

Happy Memorial Day from Airplane Life

We speak the words "Thank You" to the spirits and angels ever amoung us. Those who have kept us safe and free ... allwhile the sentiment is expressed silently and through our hearts, nothing said.

So many thoughts on this day to dwell upon.

President Nixon: "Today, on this Memorial Day, 1974, we can all be thankful that for the first time in 12 years, there are no Americans fighting anywhere in the world."
